EPUB READING GUIDE

Where to buy DRM-free EPUB books

Buy downloadable DRM-free EPUB books from Baen, Angry Robot, eBooks.com, Leanpub, Pragmatic Bookshelf, and Manning. Check format availability, watermarks, and delivery before paying.

Buying an ebook should not force you to use one reading app. The stores in this guide sell paid books as downloadable EPUB files without copy-control DRM. Free-book archives and reading subscriptions are outside its scope.

Check the file attached to the specific edition before paying. Some DRM-free stores offer certain titles only as PDF, while others sell both protected and unprotected editions. You need an EPUB edition that is both DRM-free and available to download.

The six stores are grouped by subject, not ranked.

Fiction and multi-publisher stores

1. Baen Ebooks: science fiction and fantasy

Baen sells science fiction and fantasy ebooks directly. Its official FAQ states that its ebooks are DRM-free and lists EPUB among the downloadable formats.

For a straightforward purchase, choose a released ebook and download its EPUB edition. The site also sells electronic advance reader copies, or eARCs. These are not the final published editions.

Keep your own backup. Baen warns that it may have to remove a title after publishing rights revert, which can also end access to a fresh download.

2. Angry Robot: buy speculative fiction directly from the publisher

Angry Robot provides a direct-buy option for its ebooks. Its ordering guide describes DRM-free ebooks delivered in a ZIP containing EPUB and MOBI files. A book page such as Time Salvager also identifies an ebook edition with EPUB and MOBI formats.

Select the ebook option rather than the print edition. After downloading the bundle, extract the EPUB file from the outer ZIP for your reader.

These terms apply when you buy directly from Angry Robot. The publisher warns that other retailers may apply DRM, so check the conditions of the store you use.

3. eBooks.com: choose the DRM-free EPUB subset

eBooks.com has a DRM-free EPUB browsing page, but the store as a whole is not DRM-free.

Its buying guide explains that the general DRM-free filter can match a book when at least one format is unprotected. Its EPUB may still have DRM.

Open the product’s “About this Ebook” section and check the EPUB line. “drm free” and “drm free, digitally watermarked” identify eligible editions; “DRM Protected” does not. A DRM-free PDF sold alongside a protected EPUB does not meet the criteria for this guide.

Technical books and independent publishing

4. Leanpub: check both format and completion status

Leanpub is a place to buy technical and independently published books. Its terms of service state that it does not use DRM and does not allow authors to upload DRM-protected products.

EPUB is not guaranteed for every book: authors using its upload workflow may supply only selected formats. Check the listed files before buying.

Also check whether the book is complete or still being written. For an EPUB purchase, select a paid book that lists EPUB among its current files. Courses and other products may not include an ebook file.

5. Pragmatic Bookshelf: programming books in downloadable formats

Pragmatic Bookshelf sells books on programming, development tools, software design, and related subjects. Its official purchasing information describes its ebooks as DRM-free and usable in readers that support EPUB, PDF, or MOBI.

Choose the ebook purchase option and check the formats included with the title. Receiving several formats does not mean you need to import all of them: keep the originals, then use the EPUB file with an EPUB reader.

For a beta or pre-release edition, check which chapters and files are available now. Courses and online-only reading services do not provide the downloadable book covered here.

6. Manning: confirm that the EPUB edition has been released

Manning sells technical ebooks covering areas such as programming and data. Its FAQ confirms a DRM-free policy and says purchases include the electronic formats available for the title.

The timing matters: Manning explains that EPUB conversion starts after the final electronic PDF is released and can take additional time. A book available to buy is therefore not automatically ready to download as an EPUB.

Check the product page’s format list, particularly for a Manning Early Access Program (MEAP) title. Buy with the formats available today in mind, rather than treating a future EPUB as an immediate download. Delivery is available through purchase emails and the customer’s Manning account.

DRM-free files can contain watermarks

A digital watermark can identify the purchaser without restricting how an ebook opens. eBooks.com’s DRM FAQ separates DRM-free, digitally watermarked files from files with copy-control DRM.

Watermarked EPUBs are included when the seller classifies them as DRM-free. The watermark means the file is not anonymous, and the lack of copy controls does not grant permission to distribute it. Follow the publisher’s licence and the store’s terms.

What to check before paying

Confirm that the purchased edition includes an EPUB now, not only a sample, another edition, or a promised future format.

Then check the purchase route. A publisher’s own store and another retailer can sell the same title under different DRM terms. Angry Robot’s ordering guide documents this difference.

For a preorder or early-access book, read the list of files and content available today. Also check the language and edition. If you plan to upload the file to an online reader, review the seller’s licence and storage terms first.

Read a purchased EPUB in BlueReader

After buying a suitable EPUB, you can read it across your devices in BlueReader:

  1. Download the purchased EPUB from the seller. If it arrives in an outer ZIP bundle, extract the EPUB but do not extract the EPUB archive itself.
  2. Keep a separate copy of the original download, then sign in to BlueReader.
  3. Upload the EPUB to your bookshelf. BlueReader processes it on the server.
  4. Open the book when processing finishes. The same account carries your reading position to another device.

BlueReader’s features and FAQ explain reading-position sync and its lack of support for DRM-protected EPUBs. A DRM-free file can still contain layouts or features that do not work identically in every reader.

Keep the purchased EPUB outside BlueReader. BlueReader cannot export an uploaded EPUB, so the service should not be your only copy.

Common buying questions

Is every ebook from these stores a DRM-free EPUB?

No. Some stores have a DRM-free policy but provide different formats for different books. eBooks.com also sells DRM-protected editions, and Manning’s EPUB release can lag behind its PDF. Check both the file format and DRM status for the edition you plan to buy.

Can I assume every book listed here has been tested in BlueReader?

No. The recommendations come from the sellers’ published download and DRM policies, not purchases of every listed book. Check the product’s format notes and your reader’s capabilities before buying for one app.

Where should I look for free EPUBs instead?

For books distributed at no cost, see the separate guide to free EPUB download sites. This article focuses on paid purchases.

Store policies checked: September 2026. Prices, availability, formats, and terms can change. Purchases and tests of every title were outside the research scope, so check the current product page before paying.
