Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights: Which Should You Read First?

Compare the voices, openings, and reading experience of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights without revealing their central secrets or endings.

The shared Brontë name can make Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights look like two versions of the same invitation. They are not. One draws you in through a voice speaking directly about a life. The other makes you work out, through several accounts, who knows what about a household.

Choose by the kind of reading you want now, not by which book you feel you ought to prefer. This comparison keeps the central secrets and final relationships out of view.

Start with the voice, not the reputation

QuestionJane EyreWuthering Heights
Who first guides you?Jane, telling her own story retrospectivelyLockwood, an outsider entering an unfamiliar household
What opens the door?A child’s place in a dependent and hostile situationA visitor’s attempt to understand people he has only just met

These are differences in structure, not judgments about which novel is easier or better.12

Choose Jane Eyre when you want to stay close to one voice

Charlotte Brontë introduces Jane within the Reed household, where her dependence is inseparable from questions of belonging and treatment. The story begins before the setting many readers associate with its later romance.3

Do not hurry through the childhood chapters as though they only explain how the “real” novel becomes possible. They establish what Jane finds unjust, how she responds, and how memory turns experience into an account addressed to a reader.

A useful first-reading question: what can the narrator now articulate that the child could only experience? Notice when a remembered scene gains emphasis through the way it is told.

The attraction is sustained company with a particular intelligence. You may agree with Jane, resist her interpretation, or do both. Following her voice does not require giving up your own judgment of everyone around her.

Choose Wuthering Heights when you enjoy making sense of a story told through others

Emily Brontë begins with Lockwood’s visit to Heathcliff and an environment he does not understand as well as he initially assumes. Later, Nelly Dean’s account becomes central to how an earlier history reaches him and the reader.4

The telling has several distances built into it. Someone remembers an event; someone else listens; you encounter the account through an arranged narrative. Rather than searching immediately for a single neutral version, ask how the speaker’s position shapes the story.

The opening can be confusing without being impossible to follow. Identify the current location and speaker first. When similar names appear, add a short note only after the text establishes the relationship. Avoid a complete online family tree; it is an efficient way to learn developments you have not reached yet.

Choose this book if uncertainty about the account itself feels inviting. Its intensity lies in what happens and also in how people keep explaining one another.

Neither choice is a promise of a gentle romance

Both novels contain cruelty, coercive relationships, illness, death, and social inequalities. Their settings can be atmospheric without making their households safe. A passionate declaration should not be treated automatically as an example of a healthy relationship.34

If your current mood is for warmth and reassuring companionship, another book may be a better starting point. That is a choice about today’s reading, not a verdict on either novel.

The texts also contain historical racial, class, and gender assumptions. Notice how those assumptions enter a voice or description instead of treating the novels as transparent records of how everyone thought or lived.

How to handle unfamiliar language

In Jane Eyre, a long sentence may carry a precise distinction in feeling or judgment. Find its main assertion, then return to the qualifying phrases. In Wuthering Heights, dialect and changes in narrator can add a different kind of friction.34

Do not solve all of those difficulties with the same tool. A dictionary can explain a word; it cannot by itself tell you which person is recounting an event. For the second problem, a short note about the speaker may be more useful than another definition.

Pause after a scene and summarize the immediate conflict in one sentence. If you can, you have enough orientation to continue without consulting an account of the whole plot.

Try the openings before committing

Read the first chapter of each. After Jane Eyre, ask whether you want to hear more from this voice. After Wuthering Heights, ask whether the unfamiliar household makes you curious enough to stay with the layers of telling.

Whichever you choose, keep the other as a different experience rather than the mandatory next step. Reading one first does not provide a key that unlocks the other.
